Spin Master announced plans to bring Bakugan to the big screen. The popular anime has had three animated adaptations through Spin Master Entertainment. This will be the first live-action and theatrical adaptation.
Spin Master produced Bakugan Brawlers for four years for Teletoon and TV Tokyo, Bakugan: Battle Planet for Netflix and Cartoon Network for five seasons, and Bakugan, currently airing on Netflix. Spin Master Entertainment has tapped Brad Peyton to write, direct, and produce the live-action film.
“We’re excited to build a hit franchise with global appeal,” Peyton says. “I am confident we will create a must-see film event that does justice to the unique and epic world that is Bakugan.”
Bakugan follows a group of kids who defend their home dimension after finding a set of mysterious playing cards. The IP has toys, print and digital content, and its own card game. The television series has almost 300 episodes while the toy line has generated $1 billion in sales worldwide in 100 countries.
“Bakugan is a global franchise with a multi-generational and devoted fanbase, built on the strength of its compelling characters and explosive battles,” says Jennifer Dodge, Spin Master Entertainment President. “As fans who were part of its initial craze now enter adulthood, we are thrilled to be working with accomplished filmmaking talent like Brad to reimagine Bakugan in live action, expanding the franchise for fans while introducing it to new audiences around the world.”
