Spiclypeus (PNSO) – Dinosaur Toy Blog

Standing tall atop the sloping ridge that overlooks the north side of the lake, with the sun beaming down generously on her, Judith surveys the activity going on below. At the bottom of the ridge, next to the water and directly before her, a huge crocodilian is dozing peacefully. Further down the shore, a family group of fellow ceratopsians (but not of Judith’s kind) is arriving to take a drink. And even further down, a dozen or so hadrosaurs are wading and grazing in the shallows. Pterosaurs and birds are alighting and ascending everywhere. There is nary a tyrannosaur in sight. If only Judith were more intelligent, she might muse to herself that this is a beautiful day.

Just then, the ground beneath her front feet crumbles and before she knows it, she pitches headfirst down the slope. Over and over she tumbles, bellowing in fright, until she slams directly onto the dozing crocodilian’s back. The big reptile wakes up with a bang and instinctively launches itself into the water, carrying Judith along for the ride! It disappears into the deep, leaving her sore but safe in the shallows. As she struggles to her feet, she notices the other ceratopsians are staring curiously at her. If only Judith were more intelligent, she might feel embarrassed . . .

Back in 2021, I had the pleasure of reviewing the very first toy of the chasmosaurine ceratopsid Spiclypeus. Now here’s the second one, released by PNSO earlier this year and appropriately dubbed Judith after Montana’s Judith River Formation in which her species was discovered.

From her beak to her tail tip, Judith measures 17 cm long and like many of her kind, is sculpted in a calm and casual walking pose. Her left front limb is raise in mid-step and both her head and her tail are turned slightly to the right.

The main colour on Judith is a flat shade of muddy brown with dark brown stripes on her torso and tail, greyish brown claws, and faint patches of pink applied to certain parts of her underbelly. Her skull is also decorated with dark brown stripes, her horns and epiparietals are tipped with dark orange, and her tiny eyes are light orange. Topping it off are the bright blue markings on her frill and forehead. They compliment the orange bits and contrast with the brown body very well. Overall, while Judith is nowhere near as flashy as her Beasts of the Mesozoic counterpart shown above, she looks very good in these colours.

Judith’s body features super small scales all over, with plenty of wrinkles on her limbs, flanks, and neck. There are also a great many round, flattened osteoderms dotting her hide. Like any proper chasmosaurine, she has a short tail, a flattened pelvis, an arched back, and stout, powerful limbs. Her feet have the correct number and arrangement of digits.

Judith’s head is also covered in small scales, with much larger ones around the perimeter of her frill. Said frill certainly has the correct profile for Spiclypeus, with a large dip at the top centre flanked by triangular epiparietals.

The relatively short brow horns, pointing out to the sides, and the large nasal horn are correct as well. In addition, Judith boasts a particularly sharp beak, as pointy as the one on a macaw. Indeed, it actually looks more intimidating and dangerous than her horns!

The accompanying poster is yet again an image of the toy superimposed against a natural background, but it still looks nice. And the booklet does contain a single page of original paleoart as well as toy images and a how-to-draw section.

Overall, Judith the Spiclypeus is yet another solid success for PNSO. Definitely worth adding to your collection, even if you do already own the BotM one.
