The NWHM celebrates women’s diverse contributions to society and showcases the untold stories of women throughout history. At the upcoming Gala, the museum will honor distinguished figures across various fields who contribute to society by inspiring women and the future of women’s history.

Mattel will receive the Evelyn Y. Davis Corporate Changemaker Award for its ability to empower generations of girls to explore the wonders of childhood and reach their full potential. By accepting this award, Mattel will be the first company to be recognized for its societal impact through recognizable brands, including Barbie, Monster High, and American Girl

Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and chief brand officer of Mattel, will receive the award on the company’s behalf. Along with overseeing the company’s toy brands and categories, the 25-year Mattel veteran transformed Barbie into the No. 1 Global Toy Property (2020,2021) and the No. 1 Global Doll property (2020-2024).

In past ceremonies, the Gala has honored trailblazing women like Rita Moreno, Maya Angelou, and Katherine Johnso, all of which have Barbie dolls made in their likeness. By honoring Mattel, the Gala hopes to encourage more brands to take action by promoting gender equality and representation.

“It is an incredible honor for Mattel to be recognized with the inaugural Evelyn Y. Davis Corporate Changemaker Award,” says McKnight. “This award reflects Mattel’s commitment to our purpose, the impact of initiatives like the Barbie Dream Gap Project, and how our brands like Barbie, Monster High, and American Girl allow generations of children everywhere to see themselves in our products, content, and experiences.”

“Mattel is a trailblazer in challenging stereotypes and advancing gender equity through the power of play and storytelling,” says NWHM Board Chair Susan D. Whiting. “Mattel has shown an unwavering commitment to empowering girls to see themselves as limitless, capable and powerful.”

The Women Making History Awards Gala will take place at The Anthem in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, March 20, 2025. To learn more about the awards ceremony and the museum, visit womenshistory.org.
