I’m not normally interested in the Mattel Jurassic World mini figures, preferring instead to focus on the Captivz line, but every once in a while, they release something that grabs my attention. Such was the case here with the “mini” Dreadnoughtus, by far the largest figure in the minis line. Even though I have Mattel’s gigantic mainline Dreadnoughtus, I had to have this one too.

Although Mattel minis are blind box toys each box has a unique code that betrays what’s inside. Thanks to its code (1786FG-012) I was able to look through the box of minis at my local Walmart and find exactly what I wanted without having to gamble with my money or rip open packages in the aisle like a barbarian.

Most of the Mattel minis are boxed in pairs but some of the larger dinosaurs are packaged alone and in the case of the Dreadnoughtus it came packaged alone in three pieces! Once popped in the separate pieces remain firmly attached but you’ll need to apply some pressure to really get them tightly together.

The mini Dreadnoughtus stands 3.5” (8.89 cm) tall to the top of the head and measures 8.25” (2.96 cm) long! A giant by mini standards. For the sake of calculating scale, we must measure it along its curves and doing so yields a length of 8.75” (22.23 cm). This gives us a scale of 1/116 when scaled down from the estimated 85’ (26 meters) length of Dreadnoughtus.

Compared to Captivz figures, the Mattel minis are usually pretty crude, with minimal paint applications and gigantic feet in the case of the bipeds. It seems like a bit of extra love was afforded to this one though. The paint application is still simple, but it appears complete, with a deep blue body and cream stripes running from the back of the head and down to about half the length of the tail. The eyes are black.

The entire figure has a wrinkled texture, and saggy skin folds run along the underside of the neck and tail. The legs are thick and muscular, the digits are individually defined, and the ribs are slightly visible under the skin. Small, individually discernable teeth are sculpted within the open mouth.

I must say, I’m quite impressed by this mini figure, enough so that I decided to review it when I’ve never felt compelled to review a Mattel mini before. I find a lot of Mattel’s mini figures kind of forgettable, but this one is something special that should appeal to anyone with an appreciation for smaller sized figures and sauropods in general. Make sure you copy down the code I provided if you want to find a guaranteed Dreadnoughtus.
