Gallimimus (CollectA) – Dinosaur Toy Blog

Review and images by Henry, age 12, edited by Suspsy

Gallimimus was a large ornithomimid from the Campanian and Maastrichtian of the Nemegt Formation in Mongolia and coexisted with a large array of popular fauna such as Tarbosaurus, Therizinosaurus, and Deinocheirus, as well as lesser known ones like Barsboldia, Tarchia, and Adasaurus. It was described in 1972 and remained in relative obscurity until its featuring in the original Jurassic Park, in a scene in which, despite them being featherless, they are compared to birds. Which was fitting given that Gallimimus translates to “chicken mimic.” Thirty-two years after Jurassic Park was released, CollectA has given us an accurate, feathered, and most importantly, 1/35 figure of this genus. And what a figure it is!

For me, CollectA was for a lot of the time a relatively unremarkable company. Apart from their Megalosaurus and Geosternbergia, I wasn’t too fussed about it. When the releases for 2025 started being revealed, I genuinely did not like most of them. But when I saw this Gallimimus, I could have jumped for joy! Not only was it 1:35 scale, but it looked like CollectA was getting higher on my list of companies.

This figure is 17 cm (6.6 inches) long and 13 cm (5.1 inches) tall. Assuming a 6 metre (20 foot) long adult, this puts us exactly at 1:35 scale, perfect for everyone who wished for an ornithomimosaur in their collections! As always with CollectA Deluxes, it is marketed as 1:40 scale, however they do tend to be a larger scale in person than is stated. For 1:40 scale, this individual would have to be 6.8 metres (22.3 feet) long, which would not be common, but not outside the realm of possibility either.

The head is, unusually, one of the least detailed parts of the body. However, the sculpt is quite nice. It doesn’t show the inferred beak very well, but the paint does suggest it better with a very dark grey. The tongue is present and is painted with a solid skin tone and the eyes are a glossy black, something that I think is better than Haolonggood’s cartoony eyes, but I also still think it looks kind of odd. The feather detail is consistent with the rest of the body and forms a speculative crest at the back of the head, accentuated with a deep red. There is also a speculative wattle in the throat area painted red as well. I really like this and wish companies would add features like this on more figures.

The throat is painted with a creamy white that continues down and onto the chest. The salmony pink main colour goes over the back and down onto the arms. The wing feathers, as preserved in Ornithomimus, are sculpted very nicely and are painted in a light blue, which has been given a heavy drybrush, and then some red speckles. I have to say, I really like this effect and think it really makes this figure stand out in a really good way! The claws are sculpted on the digits, but they are quite blunt. I also think there should be some more variation in the finger length, but they are mostly obscured by the wings anyway so it doesn’t matter too much.

The legs are mostly bare and scaly and painted grey with a light coloured drybrush. I think the scalation detail is very good, better than some Haolonggood or even some PNSO figures! Again, the claws do seem a little blunt, but I prefer them to be that way on ornithomimosaurs for some reason. The pubis and ischium are nicely pronounced and the cloaca is defined in a dark grey.

The tail is wide at the base, indicating a large caudofemoralis longus muscle, whilst the salmony colour continues down the tail. The tail ends in a large fan that is sculpted really nicely. It is painted in the same blue as the wings, however, it doesn’t have the drybrushing of the light blue. Which is slightly disappointing because I really like the effect on the wings.

This figure, like most CollectA bipeds, comes with a base. Now, a lot has been said about bases or no bases with CollectA. On the one hand, figures without a base can be subject to oversized feet, and on the other hand, most CollectA bases just look cheap. I am probably going to repaint this base at some point because it would make it look a lot better. The base is painted a solid beige and sculpted with a subtle texture. It also has several smaller theropod footprints and (I assume) another ornithomimosaur arm. The bottom of the base sports the traditional CollectA logo, Gallimimus stamp, Made in China stamp, and © 2024.

Overall, I think this is an amazing figure that deserves to be in any collection. The paint and detailing is outstanding, even matching some of the top brands! I think it goes really well with other Nemegt fauna (the mystery hadrosaur below on the right is the PNSO Lambeosaurus turned into a Saurolophus) and other ornithomimosaur figures. Other than my minor nitpicks on the base, it is an almost perfect figure in my eyes. It is in wide distribution and currently retails for £9.99 ($13.49).
