With the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth this past summer, Toy Monster released an entirely new product in their Captivz line: dioramas! Three of them were released, featuring a Captivz figurine and a buildable diorama depicting the scene in the movie that the animal was featured in. Diorama sets were made for the T. rex, Mosasaurus, and Quetzalcoatlus scenes. After getting back-to-back repeats with the mystery eggs, I decided to get a diorama set for a couple dollars more with the added bonus of knowing which figure I was getting. I went with the Quetzalcoatlus, let’s take a closer look!

The diorama set comes packaged inside a plastic cage. The pieces of the cage disassemble and once inverted become the base for our diorama. Be careful taking the panels apart though, as the connecting points are easily snapped. Stickers come with the set and will need to be applied to the panels. They fit on the panels in a precise way so that small pegs on the panels stick through them. Steady hands! Other accessory stickers are included and can be placed where desired. In this set you get some climbing rope, a gun, and some bits of crumbling structure from the ancient ruins.

Along with the figurine you also get some other plastic pieces. With this one you get a nest and 2 pieces of stone walls with carvings on them. These fit onto the pegs that are molded onto the panels and can be placed where desired, although they only make sense in a few locations.

The Quetzalcoatlus is the exact same figure as the Dominion-style Quetzalcoatlus, just with a different head and neck. For a review of that figure, click here. The Head has been replaced with one that looks like Rebirth’s version. The closed beak has a backward pointing hooked crest and there’s a gular pouch along the throat.

The beak is painted gray, and the crest is painted with alternating black and orange bands. The eye sockets are red, and the eyes are yellow with black pupils. The shaggy pycnofibers on the nape are purple, and the throat is red. The body is mottled black and gray, the outside surface of the wings are blue, and the inside surface of the wings are red. The wing coloration makes it more accurate than Mattel’s Aerial Ambush Quetzalcoatlus.

The Captivz Dinoramas are fun little sets that only cost slightly more than the eggs with the added benefit of knowing which dinosaur you’ll get. Sadly, there are only three sets with three different animals. Since I already have the T. rex and Mosasaurus from the eggs I doubt that I will get the remaining two dioramas. The dioramas are also fun in that you could swap out the included animals for different ones too, Captivz or otherwise. I may have been a little late in reviewing this one though, it looks like they’re already discontinued and on the secondary market online! The shelf life of these things is pitifully short. They might still be available in stores; I got mine from Walmart.
